It has been three years and three months since OP-CIP was established in December 2022. With the addition of these new members, the total number of participating companies and organizations has reached 48.

Originator Profile (OP) is a technology designed to provide a safe internet environment, with the goal of becoming a web standard adopted by browsers and other platforms. By providing information about online content creators and digital advertisers in a verifiable manner, OP makes it possible to identify trusted originators, establishing a system that allows internet users to easily distinguish high-quality, third-party verified media and content. This in turn helps curb the proliferation of dis/misinformation, ad fraud, and fraudulent ads.

Under the supervision of Keio University’s Cyber Civilization Research Center, OP-CIP is currently working with various stakeholders to advance OP specification development and trial implementation in Japan, with the aim of achieving web standardization and social implementation. Based on knowledge gained through domestic research, OP-CIP is also submitting proposals to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and other organizations, with the goal of contributing to the development of a healthy internet that people around the world can use with confidence.

◾️Statement from Jun Murai, Senior Advanced Research Project Professor, Keio University and Chief Director of OP-CIP

“Our efforts to bring Originator Profile (OP) technology to practical use have been met with understanding and high expectations from many quarters. In the three years and three months since OP-CIP was established in December 2022, our membership has grown to 48 corporate members, for which we are deeply grateful.

OP is a technology designed to allow end users to verify the authenticity of information originators. By applying digital signature technology to enable safer disclosure of information on content originators, readers and consumers can more easily receive information from clearly identified sources, which is expected to reduce anxiety about the reliability of information. In particular, our approach of focusing on end-user verification from the user’s perspective is globally unique, and OP technology is attracting significant interest both in Japan and internationally.

OP-CIP is also participating in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ Development and Demonstration Projects for Countermeasure Technologies against Dis-/Mis-information on the Internet. These projects seek technological solutions to social issues in the digital information space, including the spread of dis/misinformation on social media surrounding the Noto Peninsula earthquake in January 2024, and the large volume of dis/misinformation that circulates during election periods. We continue to participate in and contribute to these initiatives.

OP technology will help make trustworthy information media more visible and contribute to improving the reliability of the digital information space, which has been called into question by the spread of dis/misinformation and issues related to the digital advertising ecosystem such as ad fraud and fraudulent ads. The technology is also expected to serve as a countermeasure against impersonation not only for information media but also for government and local authorities, as well as public interest entities.

OP-CIP is currently conducting ongoing trials toward social implementation and is approaching full-scale operation. We are also pursuing international standardization as an internet technology specification, with concrete preparations already underway. Going forward, we will continue to accelerate our efforts toward international standardization, including the practical application and social implementation of OP technology.”
