About
We at the Originator Profile Collaborative Innovation Partnership (OP CIP) are researching and developing Originator Profile (OP) technology, which labels information about the originator of content on the Internet, such as news articles and advertisements. OP CIP aims to improve the trust of the digital space by displaying to Internet users that information comes from a trustworthy source. OP technology aims to solve various problems by making information sources (publishers and advertisers) and its distribution channel transparent.
- OP will label web content with originator information, allowing web users to check the trust of the content.
- The originator information labels provided by OP are machine-readable metadata, which allows advertisers to identify the other party when digital advertisements are transacted mechanically. This will make it more difficult for sites that spread fake news or aim to easily gain attention to earn advertising revenue, thereby reducing infringement of the rights and interests of legitimate web publishers and content distributors.
- Being able to identify the other party in digital advertising transactions will help resolve digital advertising issues such as ad fraud and ensuring brand safety, allowing advertisers to use digital advertising with confidence.
However, OP technology itself does not distinguish among publishers or advertisers. It is a technology that allows existing certification bodies to use OP technology to make the world of the Internet healthier, more public-interest, and more transparent.
OP technology is currently in the proof-of-concept stage, with testing being conducted primarily by Japanese companies. Based on the feedback obtained from these trials, OP will be further developed and put into practical use in society. The technology will then be proposed to organizations such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is a standardization organization for web technologies, along with an open source implementation.
In parallel with standardization activities at the W3C, we will continue to make proposals and cooperate with the web content industry, online advertising industry, and browser vendors around the world, in order to contribute to the development of a healthy Internet that everyone can use with confidence.
