Created At: Oct 3, 2024

We are pleased to announce that the Originator Profile (OP) Collaborative Innovation Partnership, which is made up of domestic and international media and advertising-related companies, has decided to add four new members after a resolution at the Extra General Meeting on October 3rd.

Akita Sakigake Shimpo, The Kyoto Shimbun, The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun, Dai Nippon Printing (in Japanese alphabetical order)

It has been nearly 2 years since the association was established in December 2022. With this addition, the number of participating companies and organizations has increased to 45, including 41 as of the end of June.

This technology, named OP, is a mechanism for providing a safe Internet environment and aims to become a "web standard" adopted by browsers and other devices. It is a technology that provides information such as content creators on the Internet and the source of digital advertisements in a verifiable form, and by making it possible to identify reliable content originators, it will establish a mechanism for Internet users to easily distinguish between high-quality media and content that has been third-party certified. OP will also help prevent the proliferation of disinformation and misinformation (so-called fake news) and ad fraud.

Under the supervision of the Cyber Civilization Research Center at Keio University, the Originator Profile Collaborative Innovation Partnership is working with various stakeholders to develop OP specifications and test implementations in Japan, aiming for web standardization and social implementation. Based on the knowledge gained from domestic research, we are making proposals to organizations such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is a standardization organization for web technology, with the aim of contributing to the development of a healthy Internet that can be used safely by people all over the world.

Overview of the Originator Profile Collaborative Innovation Partnership

A Comment from Jun Murai, Professor at Keio University and Chief Director of the Originator Profile Collaborative Innovation Partnership

"Our efforts to put OP technology to practical use have received understanding and expectations from various quarters. Nearly two years after the OP Collaborative Innovation Partnership was established in December 2022, the number of participating companies and organizations has reached 45, and we are deeply grateful for that.

In the wake of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January this year, there have been a series of cases of disinformation and misinformation spreading on social media, and OP technology has attracted great interest both domestically and internationally as one of the countermeasures. OP CIP’s project was also selected as a countermeasure in disaster-stricken areas using OP technology for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "Development and Demonstration Project for Countermeasures against Disinformation and Misinformation on the Internet."

OP CIP is currently conducting demonstration experiments toward social implementation. We are also aiming for international standardization of Internet technical specifications and are making concrete preparations. We will continue to accelerate our activities toward international standardization as well as practical application and social implementation of OP technology.

What we are developing is a new technology that enables the safe disclosure of information about content originators using digitized codes. If OP technology is implemented in society and its use in media, advertising, etc. spreads, it will help maintain a healthy Internet space, which will ultimately increase the public interest.

We hope that OP technology will make reliable media visible, leading to improved reliability of news, which is currently being questioned due to the spread of disinformation and misinformation, and in particular contributing to the creation of a healthier digital advertising market."
